Serengeti National Park
Overview
Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most iconic safari destination, famous for its endless plains, dramatic predator action, and the world’s greatest wildlife movement, the Great Migration. The park covers roughly 14,763 to 15,000 square kilometers of savannah, riverine forests, and rocky kopjes (granite outcrops that become natural lookout points for big cats).
Serengeti sits in northern Tanzania, forming a wider ecosystem that continues into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. It’s a core part of the Northern Safari Circuit and pairs perfectly with Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire.
Why Visit Serengeti
Serengeti is the park people imagine when they picture “classic Africa”:
Big cats, always: excellent chances to see lions, cheetahs, and leopards, especially around the central areas.
The Great Migration: massive herds of wildebeest and zebra moving in search of grazing and water.
Epic landscapes: wide open plains, acacia-studded valleys, rivers, and kopjes that make game drives feel cinematic.
If you want a safari with “wow” moments that happen naturally, Serengeti is that stage.
Wildlife Highlights
Serengeti is home to an incredible range of animals, including:
Lions, leopards, cheetahs
Elephants, buffalo, giraffes
Zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, hyenas
Hippos and crocodiles along major rivers
It’s also one of the best places in Africa for predator sightings because the ecosystem supports huge prey numbers, especially during migration seasons.
The Great Migration
The Great Migration is a year-round cycle, but different areas shine at different times:
Dec to Mar: Southern plains, often with calving season energy
Apr to Jun: Herds spread and begin moving north through central areas
Jul to Oct: The famous river crossing period, with dramatic scenes at major rivers (including the Mara River).
Nov: Movement begins back south with the short rains
If you tell your travel month, Good 2 Go Africa can match you with the best Serengeti region for that time.
Best Time to Visit
Serengeti is a year-round safari destination, but the experience changes by season:
Dry season (Jun to Oct): easier wildlife viewing, and peak migration drama in the north later in the season.
Green season (Nov to May): lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent photography light (plus many baby animals early in the year).
Location and How to Get There
Most safaris start from Arusha, and Serengeti is reachable by:
Road: typically a full-day drive depending on the route and stops (often via Ngorongoro).
Flight: daily scheduled and private flights land on Serengeti airstrips (quick and comfortable for shorter itineraries).
Activities in Serengeti
Popular experiences include:
Game drives (morning, afternoon, or full day)
Hot air balloon safari (sunrise, with bush breakfast)
Photography-focused safaris (timed for golden light and wildlife behavior)
Cultural experiences on the edges of the ecosystem (where appropriate)
Birdlife
Serengeti is also surprisingly strong for birding, with hundreds of species recorded in the ecosystem.
Expect eagles, vultures, hornbills, colorful rollers, and many seasonal migrants.
