8 Days Complete Great Migration Safari Experience

Safari Overview

This 8-day safari is designed for travelers who want a complete Great Migration experience while still enjoying Tanzania’s classic Northern Circuit highlights. The journey begins in Tarangire National Park and then moves into Serengeti, where you will explore both Central Serengeti and Northern Serengeti, the two key regions during the migration season.

During July to October, the herds move north through Serengeti toward the Mara River, where dramatic crossings often occur as thousands of wildebeest and zebras attempt to reach fresh grazing in the north.

This itinerary maximizes your chances of seeing migration movement by spending time in both central and northern Serengeti, while also including the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater.

Best Time: July – October

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you may relax at the lodge or explore the town before the safari begins.

Main Destination: Arusha

Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park for a game drive. The park is famous for its giant baobab trees and large elephant herds.

Wildlife sightings may include giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, and predators that follow the grazing herds. In the afternoon, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Tarangire – Central Serengeti

After breakfast, travel toward Serengeti National Park through the Ngorongoro highlands. As you descend into Serengeti, the landscape opens into vast plains.

Upon entering the park, begin a game drive toward Central Serengeti, an area known for excellent year-round wildlife and strong predator activity. Dinner and overnight at your lodge or tented camp.

Main Destination: Central Serengeti

Day 4: Full Day in Central Serengeti

Spend the day exploring Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera region. This area is famous for resident wildlife populations and is often where large herds pass through as they move north during the migration cycle.

You may encounter lions resting on rocky kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains, and large herds of wildebeest and zebras moving across the grasslands.

Main Destination: Central Serengeti

Day 5: Central Serengeti – Northern Serengeti

After breakfast, drive toward the Northern Serengeti, following the path of the migrating herds. Along the way, enjoy a game drive as the scenery changes from wide plains to rolling hills and river valleys.

Arrive in Northern Serengeti in the afternoon and begin exploring areas near the Mara River where wildlife activity is often concentrated.

Main Destination: Northern Serengeti

Day 6: Full Day Northern Serengeti – Mara River Focus

Spend the day exploring Northern Serengeti with a focus on the Mara River region. This is where the most dramatic stage of the migration takes place when thousands of wildebeest gather along the riverbanks before attempting crossings.

Predators such as lions and hyenas often patrol the area, while crocodiles wait in the river, creating one of the most intense wildlife spectacles in the world.

Main Destination: Northern Serengeti

Day 7: Northern Serengeti – Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive before starting the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The drive offers beautiful scenery as the landscape gradually changes from open plains to cooler highland forests. Arrive in the afternoon and relax at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
