7 Days Great Migration Grumeti River Safari
Safari Overview
This 7-day Great Migration safari is designed for travelers visiting Tanzania during the late spring and early dry season, when the herds move through the Western Corridor of Serengeti toward the Grumeti River. This period is famous for dramatic movement across wide plains, strong predator activity, and the possibility of river crossing scenes along the Grumeti system.
You will begin in Tarangire National Park for classic elephant and savannah scenery, then spend multiple days in Serengeti focusing on the western migration route. The safari ends with a spectacular game drive inside the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich natural wonders.
Best Time: May – June
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on arrival time, you may relax at the lodge or explore town before the safari begins.
Main Destination: Arusha
Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park and begin your first game drive. Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds, baobab trees, and wildlife concentrations around the river.
You may see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and predators that follow the herds. In the late afternoon, continue to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Main Destination: Tarangire National Park
Day 3: Tarangire – Serengeti National Park (Western Corridor)
After breakfast, travel toward Serengeti National Park, continuing into the western areas where the migration route often becomes active during May and June.
Upon arrival, begin a game drive as you explore western plains and key wildlife zones. This region is well known for big herds, strong lion activity, and beautiful landscapes with a slightly wilder, quieter feel compared to central areas.
Main Destination: Western Serengeti
Day 4: Full Day in Western Serengeti – Grumeti Migration Focus
Spend the day exploring the Western Corridor with a focus on the Grumeti River region. During this season, the migration herds often gather and move in long lines across the plains.
Predators are commonly active in this area, and you may see lions, hyenas, and even crocodiles near river systems. Game drives are flexible, allowing your guide to follow the herds and spend more time where action is strongest.
Main Destination: Western Serengeti (Grumeti)
Day 5: Another Full Day in Western Serengeti
Enjoy another full day of game drives in the Western Serengeti. This extra day increases your chances of seeing migration movement and predator interactions, especially around areas where herds gather to rest, graze, or cross smaller water channels.
Your guide will tailor the day based on wildlife activity, focusing on the best possible sightings.
Main Destination: Western Serengeti
Day 6: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive in Serengeti, then begin the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
As the landscape changes from open plains to highland scenery, you’ll arrive in the Ngorongoro area in the afternoon and settle into your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Main Destination: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater – Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater floor hosts a remarkable concentration of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and many bird species.
After a picnic lunch, ascend the crater and drive back to Arusha where your safari ends.
