7 Days Great Migration River Crossing Safari
Safari Overview
This 7-day Great Migration safari is designed for travelers visiting Tanzania during the most famous migration period, the Northern Serengeti river crossing season. From July to October, large herds of wildebeest and zebras gather in the north as they search for fresh grazing, and the dramatic crossings often happen along the Mara River.
Because river crossings are wild and unpredictable, this safari focuses on spending quality time in Northern Serengeti to increase your chances of being in the right place at the right time. The itinerary also includes Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, giving you a full Northern Circuit experience alongside the migration highlight.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you may relax at the lodge or explore town before the safari begins.

Day 2: Arusha – Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park and begin your first game drive. Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds, baobab scenery, and wildlife activity around the river.

Main Destination: Tarangire National Park
Day 3: Tarangire – Serengeti (Northern Region)
After breakfast, depart for Serengeti, traveling through the Ngorongoro highlands and into the vast Serengeti ecosystem. This is a longer travel day, but it is scenic and often includes wildlife sightings as you move through changing landscapes.
Upon arrival in the northern Serengeti region, you will begin a game drive en route to your camp. Dinner and overnight in the Northern Serengeti.
Main Destination: Northern Serengeti
Day 4: Full Day Northern Serengeti – Mara River Migration Focus
Spend the day exploring the Northern Serengeti with a focus on the Mara River and the surrounding wildlife areas. During this season, large herds may gather near the riverbanks, and your guide will position the day around migration activity and animal movement.
You may also see predators such as lions and leopards, as well as crocodiles and hippos near the river. Game drives remain flexible to maximize chances of witnessing a crossing event.
Main Destination: Northern Serengeti (Mara River Area)
Day 5: Another Full Day Northern Serengeti – River Crossing Search
Enjoy another full day in Northern Serengeti. River crossings can happen quickly and without warning, so having extra time in this region increases your opportunity to witness one of nature’s most dramatic scenes.
Your guide will follow fresh information on herd movements and position you at the most active areas. Even when crossings don’t occur, the northern Serengeti still offers exceptional wildlife viewing and beautiful landscapes.
Main Destination: Northern Serengeti
Day 6: Northern Serengeti – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive before departing for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route takes you back through the Serengeti ecosystem and into the cooler highlands.

Main Destination: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater – Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater floor supports a high concentration of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, and rich birdlife.
